The leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, intervened in the debate on the amnesty law in Congress. While waiting for his turn to speak, Isabel Díaz Ayuso announced that the 11 regions governed by the PP would challenge the law before the Constitutional Court. However, Feijóo did not confirm this in his speech and his party delayed their challenge to gather more evidence before the courts, as they do not have much confidence in the justice system. Other regional presidents within the PP were upset by Ayuso’s preemptive announcement, as they had previously discussed the issue, but ultimately all expressed their rejection of the amnesty law.

Ayuso argued that the amnesty law would create a state of privilege for certain politicians, undermining the rule of law and equality among Spanish citizens. Feijóo focused his criticism on the Socialist Party during his speech in Congress, suggesting that the judiciary and the EU would ultimately have to defeat the law. The PP aims to prevent the application of the law through legal means, waiting to see how the judiciary responds to the law before taking further action.

The PP does not feel rushed to present their appeal to the Constitutional Court, as they are waiting to see how judges and prosecutors handle the law. They plan to coordinate their legal strategy with the actions of the judiciary to strengthen their case against the amnesty law. Given the progressive majority in the Constitutional Court, the PP is aware that it may be difficult to overturn the law, which adds to their concerns about the judicial process.

The regional governments led by the PP will also challenge the law, but they will do so strategically to ensure the success of their appeals. The PP is cautious in their approach, as they are aware of the challenges they may face in challenging the law before a court that they do not trust. They are closely monitoring the legal developments surrounding the law in order to build a strong case against it. Although the PP has reservations about the outcome, they are determined to use all available legal avenues to challenge the law.
