Families are considering faith-based alternatives to the Boy Scouts, now known as Scouting America, due to concerns that the organization has strayed from its original mission. Matt Markins, president and CEO of Awana, a faith-based organization, believes that organizations lose sight of their purpose when they prioritize progressive values over tradition. Awana focuses on the discipleship of children through a Bible-based youth ministry program aimed at bringing children closer to Christ and preparing them for leadership. Markins has emphasized that Awana will always remain rooted in Scripture and centered on the gospel.

The Boy Scouts of America has undergone controversial changes in recent years, such as allowing openly gay scout leaders and members, as well as admitting girls and transgender youth. The decision to rebrand to Scouting America is seen as the organization’s latest effort to promote inclusivity. Despite these changes, there has been a significant decline in membership, with numbers dropping from 1.97 million in 2019 to 1.12 million in the last year. The organization’s President and CEO, Roger Krone, has expressed a desire to remove barriers to ensure that everyone can join the organization.

In contrast to the declining membership of the Boy Scouts, Awana has experienced growth over its 74-year history and operates in 135 countries globally. Markins believes that the organization’s mission of equipping leaders to reach children with the gospel and engaging them in lifelong discipleship is essential for helping children thrive in the future. Awana aims to support parents, churches, coaches, and mentors in shaping children and youth with strong faith that will help them navigate challenges and be resilient in any cultural context.

Trail Life USA is another faith-based alternative to the Boy Scouts, founded in 2013 with a focus on teaching boys real-world skills, outdoor activities, and strengthening their faith. The organization aims to help young boys develop character and values while preparing them for challenges they may face in the future. Trail Life USA offers a counterpoint to the Boy Scouts’ progressive direction by emphasizing traditional values and faith-based teachings. With the Boy Scouts facing membership declines and controversy over policy changes, faith-based organizations like Awana and Trail Life USA are providing families with alternative options that align more closely with their beliefs and values.
