The reboot of the film I Know What You Did Last Summer has been confirmed, but original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. have not been contacted about their potential involvement. Hewitt and Prinze Jr. starred in the original 1997 film and its sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. After a failed TV reboot in 2021, Sony Pictures announced a new film for the franchise directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, set to release in summer 2025.

Hewitt and Prinze Jr. are currently in a “holding period” as they wait to hear about their potential involvement in the new film. Hewitt expressed her love for the horror genre and her character Julie James, mentioning that there is “unfinished business” and that she would be happy to return if the story felt right. While both characters survive the original films, there is a cliffhanger in the sequel that would need to be explored if they were to make another appearance.

The open ending of the original films presents challenges in creating a new story for Julie and Ray. Hewitt emphasized the importance of finding the right story and considering whether it would be a continuation or a new beginning for the characters. Additionally, timing is a factor as Hewitt has been a series regular on the show 9-1-1 since its second season, with season 8 being picked up for 18 episodes and likely beginning filming in the summer.

Despite her busy schedule, Hewitt expressed openness to returning for the new film, if the timing allows for it during a hiatus from filming 9-1-1. She is excited that people are demanding another chapter of the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy and is glad to see the positive reaction to the news. The original film series has maintained a significant fan base over the years, and the new film is anticipated by many viewers. 9-1-1 airs on ABC Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET.
