The Israel-Hamas war has been ongoing for six months and has become one of the most destructive and deadly conflicts of the 21st century. Since Hamas’ cross-border attack on Oct. 7, Israel has been heavily bombing the Gaza Strip, displacing the majority of the population, leading to famine, and preventing many Palestinians from leaving the besieged territory. In response, Hamas continues to fire rockets into Israel, as do other militant groups from southern Lebanon, resulting in further displacement of civilians on both sides of the borders. Cease-fire talks have not yielded any resolution.

Palestinian casualties in Gaza have been devastating, with over 33,000 killed, including more than 13,000 children. In Israel, approximately 1,200 people have been killed, while in the West Bank and Lebanon, hundreds have lost their lives. Civilians have borne the brunt of the conflict, with women and children making up two-thirds of the casualties in Gaza. Aid workers, health workers, journalists, and first responders have also been killed in the line of duty, adding to the humanitarian crisis.

Militant casualties in Gaza have surpassed 13,000, according to the Israeli military, while 256 Israeli soldiers have been killed in the ground offensive in Gaza and on Oct. 7. In Lebanon, around 280 militants, mostly from Hezbollah, have lost their lives. The destruction and humanitarian situation in Gaza are dire, with a significant percentage of buildings and homes damaged or destroyed, most schools damaged, and only a fraction of hospitals still functioning. The U.N. has warned of “catastrophic” food insecurity for 1.1 million Palestinians and a high percentage of malnourished children.

The number of injuries on both sides is staggering, with tens of thousands of Palestinians and Israelis sustaining injuries since the conflict began. The displacement of Palestinians in Gaza has reached 1.7 million, which accounts for 70% of the population, while 90,000 Israelis from border communities have been displaced, representing less than 1% of the population. The situation is further complicated by the capture of hostages by Hamas during the Oct. 7 raid, with many still missing or confirmed dead. A brief pause in fighting led to the release of 240 Palestinian prisoners, but the overall hostage situation remains unresolved.

The prolonged nature of the Israel-Hamas war has resulted in a devastating toll on both Palestinian and Israeli populations, with significant loss of life, widespread destruction, and a deepening humanitarian crisis. The high number of civilian casualties, including women, children, aid workers, and journalists, highlights the human cost of the conflict. The continued firing of rockets, ground offensives, and hostage situation further complicate efforts to reach a lasting peace. The urgent need for humanitarian aid, food security, shelter, and medical care underscores the severity of the crisis, with no clear end in sight to the devastating impact on the people of Gaza and Israel.
