Second gentleman Doug Emhoff used his speech at the Democratic National Convention to highlight the personal side of Vice President Kamala Harris. Emhoff emphasized Harris’ qualities of standing up to bullies, advocating for fairness, and fostering empathy. He described her as someone who is genuinely interested in how people are doing and believes in the power of curiosity. Emhoff praised Harris for her strength and dedication to fighting against antisemitism and all forms of hate throughout her career. As the first Jewish spouse of a president or vice president, Emhoff also shared how Harris has deepened his connection to his faith over the past decade.

Emhoff shared personal anecdotes during his speech, such as how he and Harris will be celebrating their 10th anniversary on the same day that she will deliver her official remarks accepting the Democratic Party’s nomination for president. He also mentioned his parents, Barbara and Michael Emhoff, who were present in the VIP suite during the speech. Emhoff humorously mentioned that his mother believes Harris is the lucky one for marrying him. He acknowledged his former wife, Kerstin Emhoff, and their role in creating a modern blended family with Harris. Emhoff’s daughter, Ella, who was also in the VIP suite, affectionately referred to them as a “three-headed parenting machine.”

During the speech, Emhoff highlighted the importance of fighting against antisemitism, a cause that is very personal to him and one that Harris has supported throughout her career. Emhoff expressed gratitude towards Harris for encouraging him to take up the fight against antisemitism as the second gentleman. As the first gentleman of Jewish descent, Emhoff discussed how Harris has influenced his faith journey and helped him deepen his connection to his religious beliefs.

The VIP suite where Emhoff delivered his speech was filled with supportive family members, including his parents and daughter, as well as other members of the Emhoff and Harris families. Red “Doug” signs were distributed to convention attendees to show support for Emhoff during his speech. The second gentleman’s address not only highlighted Harris’ personal and professional qualities but also emphasized the importance of empathy, fairness, and public service in their shared values as a couple and as individuals committed to making a difference in the world.
