A 91-year-old man named Sam Sloan recently made a generous donation of $500,000 to the Calhoun fire department in Missouri. Sloan had promised himself decades ago that he would donate to the fire department after retiring from the cattle and seed processing business. He was aware of the financial struggles faced by the small volunteer fire company, as he lived just two miles away from their headquarters. With a population of fewer than 500, Calhoun was facing financial difficulties, which Sloan was determined to help alleviate with his substantial donation.

The Calhoun fire department had been struggling financially, with only $169 left in their bank account by the end of the first quarter. Mark Hardin, who became the fire chief in 2021, took over when there was only one volunteer firefighter. Under his leadership, the department grew to a roster of 29 members. Despite their growth, the department still relied on donations from other sources to survive. In April, Hardin received a phone call out of the blue from Sloan, who requested to meet for breakfast. Over the course of a few weeks, Sloan met with Hardin and eventually surprised him with a check for $500,000.

The donation has already had a significant impact on the fire department, as they were able to purchase a much-needed new engine. Hardin ensures that every penny spent is approved by Sloan, allowing him to stay involved in the decision-making process. In appreciation of his generosity, the firefighters made Sloan an honorary fire chief and gave him a new fire chief hat. Sloan expressed his gratitude for the gesture and mentioned that he would wear the hat proudly. He only requested a large community barbecue once the department gets new uniforms and for the new fire engine to lead the procession at his funeral.

Aside from financial assistance, Sloan’s donation has provided morale and support to the firefighters at the Calhoun fire department. Their increased capabilities and equipment will enable them to continue serving the community effectively. Sloan’s kind gesture has strengthened the bond between the fire department and the local community, highlighting the importance of supporting first responders. His generosity has ensured the survival and growth of the small volunteer fire company, allowing them to fulfill their crucial role in providing emergency services to the residents of Calhoun and surrounding areas.
