Don Carlos, a notorious drug trafficker with a history of involvement in the drug trade in Latin America, was recently arrested in Marbella in early 2022. Despite being originally from Asturias, Spain, he operated in Marbella, driving a red Fiat 500 and holding meetings at the Capuccino café in the five-star Meliá Don Pepe hotel. Known for his arrogance and power, he attempted to smuggle 60 kilos of cocaine from Colombia to Madrid, but was caught by undercover agents and now faces 11 and a half years in prison for drug trafficking and illegal weapon possession. Don Carlos, now 78 years old, has a long history of criminal activities and ties to major drug cartels in Colombia.

In the 1990s, Don Carlos lived in Colombia with connections to the Cali and Medellín cartels, engaging in money laundering activities. He later moved to Madrid, where he was involved in a criminal organization that led to his arrest in 1998 and a 24-year prison sentence. Despite his past convictions and close surveillance by law enforcement, he had established a comfortable life in Marbella and continued his criminal activities with Colombian associates. However, unbeknownst to him, undercover agents had infiltrated his inner circle and were monitoring his activities for almost two years, ultimately leading to his arrest.

In January 2022, Don Carlos revealed his plan to smuggle two tons of cocaine from Colombia to Spain to undercover agents, who then intercepted a smaller shipment of 60 kilos on February 5th. The cocaine was disguised as a shipment of flowers and traced from Bogotá to Madrid to Sevilla, where it was intended for delivery. Two individuals were arrested during the exchange, with a significant amount of cash and cocaine found in their possession. Meanwhile, Don Carlos was apprehended in Marbella while overseeing the operation in real-time, leading to the discovery of a large sum of cash, a revolver, and ammunition hidden at his residence.

The prosecution is seeking 11 and a half years in prison for Don Carlos and additional sentences for his accomplices, along with substantial fines. The trial, which is pending a date, is expected to involve numerous law enforcement officials and forensic experts. Don Carlos’ arrest and the dismantling of his operation represent a significant blow to drug trafficking activities in the region, showcasing the effectiveness of undercover operations and collaboration between international law enforcement agencies in combatting organized crime networks. Despite his age and past criminal history, Don Carlos continues to pose a significant threat to public safety and must be held accountable for his actions.
