The survey of 2,000 Americans revealed that grilled cheese, chicken, and turkey are the most popular sandwiches in the United States. The poll also uncovered Americans’ favorite sandwiches, how preferences differ, and some secret sandwich hacks. In honor of National Sandwich Day, Buddig commissioned the survey, which found that sandwiches make up 30% of Americans’ diets, and nearly half of the respondents could live on sandwiches alone for the rest of their lives. On average, Americans eat six sandwiches per week, and it takes them about 10 minutes to assemble the perfect sub.

The survey revealed that a majority of Americans are sandwich pragmatists, with 58% prioritizing making a sandwich quickly over making it “just right.” However, 42% are sandwich chefs who enjoy taking their time to craft the perfect sandwich. Respondents highlighted the importance of high-quality meat, airy bread, the right condiments, and fresh veggies when making a flawless sandwich. Despite this, 40% of respondents reported that they have scaled down their sandwiches by using fewer ingredients as a result of rising grocery prices.

A significant number of Americans always keep the ingredients for sandwiches on hand to make a quick meal, with 74% indicating that they maintain sandwich supplies. Most respondents prefer toasted bread when making sandwiches, and some even go as far as cutting off the crust. While 60% consider sandwiches a staple in their diet for their versatility, others enjoy the simple pleasure of a tasty sandwich. Many respondents have a secret sandwich recipe, with meatball and chicken sandwich lovers most likely to have a unique trick or formula up their sleeve.

Sandwiches may appear simple, but they have many variations and enhancements that can take them to the next level. Some respondents shared their secret sandwich hacks, such as adding chips for crunch or marinating meat overnight. Others included more unique additions, like jalapeno jelly, baked bananas, or raisins. The survey highlighted the love Americans have for sandwiches, whether they prefer classics like grilled cheese or experiment with unique ingredients. Overall, sandwiches are considered a major menu staple that is here to stay, according to the survey’s results.
