A group of blue-state governors are making preparations to shield their states’ policies and residents from federal actions under Donald Trump’s new administration. These Democratic governors, including some potential 2028 presidential contenders, are taking steps to oppose Trump’s policies, much like they did during his first term. Governor Gavin Newsom of California is convening a special legislative session to protect civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate action, and immigrant families. This session aims to provide additional resources to defend against possible legal challenges from the federal government.
Newsom’s efforts to “Trump-proof” California’s laws have been met with criticism from Trump himself, who accused the governor of hindering efforts to make California great. In Illinois, Governor JB Pritzker also expressed a commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of his state’s residents. Efforts to secure Illinois from federal actions have been ongoing, including codifying abortion rights and environmental regulations. Pritzker’s administration is working with other Midwestern states to ensure collaborative efforts in protecting residents from potential threats under Trump’s administration.
In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the “Empire State Freedom Initiative” to address policy and regulatory threats that may arise under Trump’s administration. This initiative, in collaboration with the state’s attorney general, aims to protect New Yorkers’ fundamental freedoms. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has vowed to use every available tool to safeguard the state’s residents and uphold democracy and the rule of law. She specifically mentioned that state police would not assist in any mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
While Democratic governors in deep-blue states like California, New York, and Massachusetts are taking a proactive approach to counter Trump’s policies, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro emphasized unity and working together after Trump’s victory. In a split Legislature in Pennsylvania, plans to counter Trump may prove more challenging given the state’s political landscape. Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey pledged to resist Trump on issues that go against the state’s values while also seeking opportunities for compromise. These governors are demonstrating their commitment to protecting their states’ residents and policies against potential federal actions from the Trump administration.
