Erica Lee Carter, daughter of late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, has announced her candidacy for the U.S. House seat previously held by her mother. This decision comes in the wake of Jackson Lee’s passing last month at the age of 74 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Jackson Lee had represented Texas’ 18th congressional district for three decades. Lee Carter expressed her desire to continue her mother’s legacy, stating, “I want to finish for my mom!”

Acknowledging the support and love shown by the Houston community following her mother’s passing, Lee Carter emphasized her mother’s dedication to public service and strong legislative skills. She noted that many community leaders and democratic supporters had encouraged her to consider running in the November 5th Special Election to finish her mother’s term. After careful consideration, Lee Carter decided to pursue the opportunity, inspired by her mother’s commitment to serving the district’s interests.

Prior to her time in Congress, Jackson Lee had a successful career as a judge before being elected to an at-large seat on the Houston City Council in 1989. Having battled breast cancer in the past and being declared cancer-free in 2012, she was known for her resilience and dedication to her constituents. Jackson Lee’s daughter reflected on her mother’s work ethic and determination, describing her as the “ultimate finisher” who never took ‘No’ as a final answer.

The special election on November 5 will determine the candidate who will serve the remainder of the current term, ending on January 3. A separate election on the same day will decide the representative for the next Congress, from January 3, 2025, to January 3, 2027. Harris County Democratic Party precinct chairs will nominate a candidate for the latter race to compete against Republican Lana Centonze in the Democratic stronghold district. Lee Carter pledged to continue her mother’s legacy by advocating for justice, equality, healthcare, human rights, and economic opportunities for all if elected.

Expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to continue her mother’s work, Lee Carter called on Harris County Democrats to unite to ensure that the priorities of the 18th Congressional District are represented in national issues. Emphasizing the importance of maintaining a strong and unified Democratic presence in the district, she expressed her commitment to honor her mother’s legacy by advocating for the values and causes that mattered to her. Lee Carter’s decision to run for office reflects her desire to carry forward her mother’s legacy and serve the community with the same dedication and passion that Jackson Lee demonstrated throughout her career.
