Van Leeuwen Ice Cream has issued a recall of four pints of its Vegan Pumpkin Cinnamon Roll ice cream after a consumer with a peanut allergy reported experiencing an adverse reaction to the product due to incorrect labeling. The product was sold at the Bergen Street Brooklyn, New York location and comes in 14 oz containers with a lot number of 24V094 and a best by date of April 3, 2026. The packaging is bright orange with cream lettering, and the lid has a golden rim that reads “vegan.” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that eight pints containing the peanut allergen were distributed without proper labeling, with four pints remaining in distribution. The issue was identified as a result of a mock case sample entering the distribution channel.

The FDA warns that individuals with peanut allergies are at risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the recalled ice cream. Only one person has reported a reaction to the product at this time. Van Leeuwen Ice Cream has urged consumers who purchased the product to contact them for further instructions. Peanuts are one of the nine major allergens designated by the FDA, along with wheat, milk, tree nuts, soy, egg, crustaceans (shellfish), fish, and sesame. It is mandated by law that these common allergens be clearly marked on all products to help individuals avoid triggering allergic reactions.

Approximately 6.1 million people in the U.S. are believed to have a peanut allergy, making it the second-most common food allergy in the country after shellfish allergies. Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) estimates that 33 million Americans have some form of food allergy. Symptoms of allergic reactions can include rashes, hives, itching, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, throat and vocal cord swelling, and coughing or wheezing. Anaphylaxis, the most severe type of allergic reaction, requires immediate emergency assistance and can result in throat swelling, difficulty breathing, a sudden drop in blood pressure, and loss of consciousness. If someone is experiencing symptoms of anaphylaxis, it is important to call 911 immediately for help.

In response to a reported allergic reaction, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream has recalled four pints of its Vegan Pumpkin Cinnamon Roll ice cream due to incorrect labeling that did not disclose the presence of peanuts. The product was sold at a specific location in New York and has identifiable packaging. The FDA has warned individuals with peanut allergies of the potential risk of consuming the recalled ice cream, as allergens must be clearly marked on products to avoid triggering allergic reactions. Symptoms of allergic reactions can vary in severity, with anaphylaxis being the most serious type that requires immediate emergency assistance.

It is estimated that millions of Americans have food allergies, with peanuts being one of the most common allergens. The recall serves as a reminder of the importance of proper food labeling to protect individuals with allergies and prevent potential adverse reactions. Consumers who have purchased the recalled ice cream are advised to contact Van Leeuwen Ice Cream for further instructions. In cases of severe allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis, prompt medical attention is crucial to ensure the individual’s safety. By raising awareness about food allergies and taking necessary precautions, the risk of allergic reactions can be minimized, and individuals with allergies can safely enjoy a variety of food products.
