An $80 million redevelopment project is set to transform the Kardinya Park shopping centre in Western Australia into a major commercial, community, and residential hub. The project, which has been long-delayed, has awarded a $45 million construction contract for the bulk of the works, with construction beginning this week. The existing offerings at Kardinya Park, which include Coles and Kmart, are described as tired and in need of a revamp. The proposed redevelopment envisions a major new town centre with features such as a cinema, 12-storey apartment block, public plaza, dining precinct, 50% more retail space, multi-level car park, and healthcare tenancies. The completion date for the redevelopment is set for 2024.

The developer has awarded a $44.5 million construction contract to Focus Building Company, known for previous projects such as redeveloping the Coles in South Perth and building Yanchep Village shopping centre. The second contract, worth $2 million, is for civil works and construction of a new signalised entry to the shopping centre, awarded to Dowsing Group. Stage two of the redevelopment includes the expansion of Coles by 60% to 3800 square meters, the construction of a “wellness precinct” with a GP, medical consulting rooms, and a cafe, a new 550-bay multi-level car park with 360 undercover bays, and a fresh food market featuring new retailers such as Kardinya Quality Meats, 5 Seasons Fresh, and Kyoto Garden. Improvements to the surrounding access areas will also be made to enhance pedestrian safety and access.

The redevelopment aims to create a vibrant town centre experience, moving away from the traditional suburban shopping centre model. The project is focused on minimizing disruption to visitors and the local community during the construction phase. The Coles expansion, fresh food precinct, and ground floor car park are expected to be completed by October 2025, with the rest of stage two scheduled for completion by January 2026. Asset manager Steve Cuzens expressed the developer’s commitment to transforming Kardinya Park Shopping Centre into a modern and dynamic hub for the community, showcasing a new era for the popular shopping destination.

Overall, the redevelopment of Kardinya Park shopping centre represents a significant investment in creating a modern and diversified commercial, community, and residential hub in the region. With a focus on enhancing the overall shopping experience for visitors, the project includes new amenities such as a cinema, residential apartments, a public plaza, and a dining precinct. The expansion of Coles, the development of a wellness precinct, and the addition of a multi-level car park will cater to the growing needs of the community and provide a more convenient and accessible shopping destination. Additionally, improvements to the surrounding access areas and pedestrian facilities will ensure a safer and more user-friendly environment for visitors and residents alike.

The redevelopment project is being undertaken in stages, with a multi-million dollar construction contract awarded to Focus Building Company to complete the bulk of the works. The project also includes a significant investment in civil works and the construction of a new signalised entry to the centre, aimed at improving traffic flow and accessibility. With a completion date set for 2024, the redevelopment is expected to bring about a transformation of the traditional suburban shopping centre into a vibrant and dynamic town centre experience. The commitment to minimising disruption during the construction phase highlights the developer’s dedication to creating a smooth and seamless transition to the new and improved Kardinya Park Shopping Centre.
