Former President Donald Trump, who has been praised by conservative, anti-abortion Christians for delivering a conservative majority U.S. Supreme Court, made it clear that he would not be leading the push for a federal abortion ban as he seeks a second term. With Roe v. Wade overturned and abortion rights now controlled by individual states, some anti-abortion religious leaders criticized Trump’s approach, while others expressed gratitude for his past anti-abortion wins and vowed to continue advocating for federal restrictions. Despite not receiving a response from the Trump campaign, a video posted on his Truth Social site showed Trump endorsing the patchwork of state abortion laws that followed the 2022 Supreme Court decision, taking credit for the outcome that was celebrated by his evangelical base.

Ed Stetzer, dean of Talbot School of Theology at Biola University, categorized Trump’s approach as being pro-states’ rights and pro-abortion access, prompting fellow anti-abortion Christians to view it as a political move. Stetzer believes that convictions about life should not give way to political winds, and it is too early to determine if Trump’s stance would cause some conservative Christians not to vote for him. As Republican-led states continue to restrict or outlaw abortion, Democrats see the fight over abortion rights as a potential advantage for them in the polls. Some anti-abortion advocates view voting for President Joe Biden, who promises to restore Roe v. Wade’s protections if re-elected, as an unacceptable option.

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, a major anti-abortion group, expressed disappointment in Trump’s position, stressing the importance of national protections for unborn children and their mothers. The Faith & Freedom Coalition, founded by conservative activist Ralph Reed, plans to inform voters of where the current president stands on abortion and highlight the extremism of Biden and the far-left on the issue. Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, is advocating for federal restrictions on abortion and calls for Trump, if re-elected, to reverse Biden administration policies that expand abortion access. Despite the differing views within the anti-abortion movement, the fight for federal restrictions on abortion continues as the debate over abortion rights remains a significant issue leading up to the election.
