Representative Lauren Boebert, a staunch Donald Trump supporter, is favored by local Republican leaders as she runs for a new district seat in Colorado. Boebert, who currently represents Colorado’s 3rd District, announced her candidacy for the soon-to-be-vacant 4th District seat, which is the most Republican district in the state. Despite controversies surrounding some of her policies and reputation, including a disruptive incident at a theater in 2023, Boebert leads the five other Republican candidates vying for the seat.

A recent poll conducted by Kaplan Strategies of 343 registered likely voters showed that Boebert is supported by 40 percent of likely primary voters in the upcoming election. She also has a 47 percent favorability rating, with a positive rating of her character increasing to 41 percent. The margin of error for the poll is plus or minus 4.3 percent. Local Republican leaders believe Boebert’s strong name recognition will give her an advantage in the primary election scheduled for June 25. They also cite her connection to former President Trump as a factor that appeals to the party base, which has been demanding change.

Douglas County Republican Party chair Steve Peck emphasized the importance of backing a strong candidate like Boebert, who has access to committees, votes, political intelligence, and donors to support her campaign. Peck noted that Boebert’s alignment with Trump’s platform resonates with the Republican base, who feel their voices have not been heard by the party establishment. GOP strategist Kelly Maher also expressed confidence in Boebert’s chances to win the primary, as she does not see a viable path for any other candidate to overtake her lead.

While some Republicans may still have reservations about Boebert, the majority seem to support her as a candidate who is willing to fight for their values and beliefs. Douglas County Commissioner George Teal acknowledged that while Boebert may not have unanimous support, she has a strong plurality of Republicans who appreciate her stance on key issues. Teal noted that many voters are drawn to Boebert’s outspokenness and willingness to stand up for her convictions, signaling a desire for a candidate who is unafraid to challenge the status quo. Boebert’s press team did not respond to requests for comment on the upcoming election.
