The Israeli consulate criticized Chicago politician Rossana Rodriguez for appearing to support Iran’s attack on Israel with a pro-Palestinian tweet, despite her claim that she was unaware of the latest news when she made the post. The councilwoman had been vocal about accusing Israel of genocide and calling for a ceasefire since the conflict escalated following an attack by Hamas on October 7. Rodriguez faced backlash over the tweet, with the consulate accusing her of not aiming for peace but for Israel’s destruction, and calling on Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson to address the issue.

In response to criticisms, Rodriguez defended the timing of her tweet by explaining that she had just landed from a flight and had not seen the news before posting. She stated that she had recently viewed a video of a father mourning his dead child in Gaza, emphasizing that she does not celebrate war or loss of life. Rodriguez reiterated her support for a free Palestine and condemned those who she believed were creating further hate in the situation, referring to her critics as those who have been supportive of a genocide.

Despite the controversy and calls for condemnation from the Israeli consulate, Rodriguez’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The attack on Israel by Iran involved approximately 300 suicide drones and missiles, most of which were intercepted by Israeli air defenses. Only one casualty, a 7-year-old Bedouin girl, has been reported so far. The missiles were launched from Iran, and Israeli forces, with support from US, French, and UK ships and warplanes, successfully defended against the attack.

Amidst the escalating conflict, it was noted that fighter jets from Jordan also assisted in the defense against the attacks. However, Jordan clarified that its involvement was to protect its own airspace rather than explicitly support Israel in the conflict. The situation highlights the complexities and regional implications of the conflict between Israel and Iran, as well as the broader implications for peace and stability in the region. Politicians and officials from various countries and organizations continue to navigate the delicate dynamics and work towards finding a resolution to the ongoing conflict.
