During a guest hosting gig on “The Daily Show,” comedian Charlamagne tha God criticized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, calling them “mostly garbage” and suggesting they are just corporate Public Relations. He compared DEI programs to the black Little Mermaid, implying that just because racists dislike them, it doesn’t make them effective. Charlamagne also joked about the commonly held sentiment that diversity training sessions are ineffective and unhelpful.

Additionally, Charlamagne cited over 900 studies that have suggested DEI programs do not actually improve workplace conditions for minorities, pointing out that the number of black people in positions of power in large corporations has not significantly changed in the past five years. He argued that the lack of effectiveness of these programs comes down to them being used as a form of corporate PR to create a positive image for companies rather than implementing real change.

Charlamagne asserted that real progress in the realm of diversity, equity, and inclusion can only be achieved through black leadership. His monologue on “The Daily Show” garnered praise from some, including billionaire Elon Musk, who shared the footage with approval. Charlamagne’s willingness to speak out and share his unfiltered opinions on various issues, including politics, has been a consistent aspect of his public persona.

In a recent ABC News interview, Charlamagne criticized former President Donald Trump as a threat to democracy and described President Biden as an uninspiring candidate. In December, he also suggested that Biden should step aside to allow another Democrat to run for president. Charlamagne’s vocal critiques of political figures and institutional practices, such as DEI programs, reflect his commitment to challenging the status quo and advocating for real change that benefits marginalized communities. His willingness to engage with controversial topics and speak truth to power has earned him both praise and criticism from various sectors of society.
