The 77th annual Cannes Film Festival kicked off in the South of France, drawing A-list stars from the world of movies and television. Anya Taylor-Joy was spotted on the first day of the festival ahead of the world premiere of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, where she plays the young Imperator Furiosa. The film is a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, with George Miller returning as director. Chris Hemsworth stars alongside Taylor-Joy as Dr. Dementus in the upcoming movie, which is set to open in U.S. theaters on May 24.

Legendary actress Meryl Streep made a triumphant return to Cannes after 35 years to receive an honorary Palme d’Or, the festival’s highest honor. Streep was presented the award by French film luminary Juliette Binoche and was greeted with a two-minute standing ovation from the audience. The star reflected on her career, admitting it was like watching her past flash before her eyes as she stood on stage to accept the prestigious award.

The opening ceremonies of the festival also included the premiere of the French film The Second Act, which was attended by Hollywood stars like Eva Green, Greta Gerwig, Lily Gladstone, and Jane Fonda. The comedy stars Léa Seydoux and also features appearances from Giancarlo Esposito, Alicia Aylies, and Heidi Klum. Fonda, a Hollywood legend, was spotted at the premiere alongside French film star Omar Sy, who took a selfie with Cannes jury president Greta Gerwig. The star-studded event highlighted the international appeal and diverse talent present at the festival.

The Cannes Film Festival will continue until May 25 with various events planned to showcase the best of international cinema. Star Wars creator George Lucas will be honored with an honorary Palme d’Or on the closing night of the festival, adding to the prestigious lineup of honorees at this year’s event. In addition to the human celebrities in attendance, Messi, the dog from the Best Picture Oscar-nominated film Anatomy of a Fall, also made a red carpet appearance at the festival, following his appearance at the Oscars ceremony in March.
