CatholicVote, a top Catholic political advocacy group, recently criticized the National Football League (NFL) for claiming to prioritize inclusion while attempting to distance itself from Chiefs player Harrison Butker over his faith-filled commencement speech. Butker’s speech at Benedictine University addressed controversial topics such as President Joe Biden’s pro-abortion stance, in vitro fertilization (IVF), diversity, equity, and inclusion. The NFL released a statement asserting that Butker’s views did not align with those of the organization, prompting CatholicVote to question the league’s commitment to genuine diversity and inclusion.

The backlash against Butker’s speech included criticism from the wife of LA Rams quarterback, who denounced Butker’s views as promoting “dangerous gender ideologies.” Additionally, “The View” labeled Butker’s religious beliefs as “cult-like” and suggested that he should seek therapy. Despite the growing animosity towards Butker, CatholicVote praised his speech as courageous and called on Catholics to uphold the high ideals of their faith. The group condemned the increasing hostility and threats of violence directed at Butker, labeling it as anti-Catholic bigotry that cannot be tolerated.

Brian Burch, president of CatholicVote, emphasized that the public defense of deeply-held beliefs should not result in hatred, intimidation, or violence towards individuals like Butker. The group urged the NFL not to send a message to Catholics or those who uphold traditional moral beliefs that they are unwelcome and outsiders. CatholicVote highlighted that these ideals are not controversial for millions of Americans and remain sacred for many religious believers, including a significant portion of the NFL’s fans and customers. The group expressed hope that the NFL would not alienate these supporters, reminding the league that “Catholics watch NFL games, too.”

Despite CatholicVote’s criticism and defense of Butker, the NFL did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment regarding the situation. The league has not yet issued a response to the letter penned by CatholicVote. The advocacy group’s letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Kansas City Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt sought to challenge the league’s assertion that Butker’s views were not representative of the organization. CatholicVote questioned whether the NFL’s inclusion efforts truly encompass Catholics, pro-life Americans, mothers, and those with traditional moral beliefs.

In a show of solidarity, CatholicVote encouraged supporters to stand up for their faith and remain committed to upholding their religious values despite opposition. The group reiterated that Butker’s speech, while controversial to some, was a demonstration of courage and fidelity to his Catholic beliefs. As debates surrounding faith, politics, and society continue, CatholicVote emphasized the importance of respecting differing viewpoints and fostering genuine diversity and inclusion. The group called for mutual understanding and tolerance, urging individuals to engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to hostility or violence.
