Ukraine’s chief of military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, has warned that Russian forces are likely to resume using Kalibr cruise missiles in attacks against Ukraine. He believes that Russia will be forced to do so as their stocks of Kh-101 missiles, which were previously used in mass coordinated attacks, have decreased. Russian forces have extensively used Kalibr missiles, along with other types of missiles and drones, in their campaigns to disrupt Ukraine’s energy system and enforce blackouts. Ukrainian officials have called on Western allies to provide more air defense systems and missiles to protect Ukrainian cities from Russian strikes.

Budanov revealed that Russian forces have been stockpiling Kalibr missiles during this period of relative calm, indicating that they are ready for use. It is estimated that Russia produces a significant number of missiles per month, which includes both the expensive Kh-101 and the more affordable Kalibr missiles. The Kalibr missiles, which can be launched from ships, submarines, and aircraft, are a potent threat to Ukraine’s infrastructure. Recent Russian attacks have damaged or destroyed a significant portion of Ukraine’s thermal generating capacity, including key power plants across the country.

In March, Russian missile strikes targeted several important energy infrastructure sites in Ukraine, causing significant damage and disruption. Among the targets were hydroelectric power plants in different regions of the country, with the Hydroelectric Power Station-2 in critical condition after an attack. The attacks have raised concerns about the stability of Ukraine’s energy supply and the potential for further escalation by Russian forces. The cost of these missile strikes is significant, with estimates showing that each Kh-101 missile costs $13 million, while a Kalibr missile costs half of that price at $6.5 million.

Despite the ongoing attacks and destruction of energy infrastructure, Ukrainian officials have continued to call for support from Western allies to bolster their defenses against Russian aggression. The use of missiles like Kalibr and other advanced weaponry by Russian forces poses a serious threat to Ukraine’s security and stability. The international community’s response to the conflict in Ukraine will play a crucial role in shaping the outcome and determining the future of the region. As tensions continue to escalate and attacks intensify, the need for collective action and support for Ukraine becomes increasingly urgent.

The conflict in Ukraine, marked by Russian aggression and military operations, has led to widespread destruction and loss of life. The use of advanced missiles and drones by Russian forces has amplified the impact of their attacks on civilian infrastructure, including vital energy facilities. The continued targeting of these critical sites poses a significant challenge for Ukraine as it seeks to defend its sovereignty and protect its people. The support of independent journalism in Ukraine and the dissemination of accurate information about the situation on the ground are crucial in raising awareness and garnering support for the country’s struggle against Russian aggression.

As the situation in Ukraine remains volatile and unpredictable, the efforts of Ukrainian forces to defend against Russian attacks are ongoing. The use of Kalibr cruise missiles and other advanced weaponry by Russian forces underscores the need for increased support and assistance from the international community. The resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people in the face of adversity have been a testament to their strength and courage. The support of independent journalism and the dissemination of accurate information are vital in highlighting the ongoing conflict and advocating for peace and justice in Ukraine.
