A British doctor, Thomas Kwan, disguised himself as a nurse to inject his mother’s partner, Patrick O’Hara, with poison under the guise of administering a Covid-19 vaccine. The incident occurred in Newcastle, in northern England. Kwan arranged a fake medical appointment with O’Hara by sending him bogus letters indicating that he needed a Covid vaccination. He wore a disguise to ensure neither his mother nor O’Hara, who are both in their 70s, would recognize him. O’Hara became seriously unwell after the injection, developing a skin condition and requiring hospitalization. Doctors discovered that he had been injected with a toxin that caused severe damage to his body, leaving him with life-changing injuries. This incident is believed to have been motivated by Kwan’s desire to alter his mother’s will, which stated that O’Hara would inherit her home upon her death.

Kwan had gone as far as installing fake license plates on his vehicle before driving to O’Hara’s home to administer the poisonous injection. When police searched Kwan’s home, they found files on his computer related to the use of poisons to kill a person, including a “poisoner’s handbook.” The prosecution argued that Kwan’s extensive knowledge of poisons and his research led him to carry out the attempted murder. Despite initially pleading not guilty, Kwan eventually changed his plea and admitted to the charge of attempted murder. He remains in custody pending his sentencing, which is scheduled for a later date. Detective Chief Inspector Jason Henry of Northumbria Police stated that the overwhelming evidence against Kwan has ensured that he has been brought to justice for his actions.

The poisoning incident left O’Hara with a fatal flesh-eating bacterial infection known as necrotizing fasciitis, which required skin grafts to repair the extensive damage caused to his body. The exact toxin used in the injection has not yet been confirmed by authorities. The Crown Prosecution Service described the incident as a deliberate act of injecting O’Hara with a harmful substance that resulted in grievous bodily harm. The poisoning occurred shortly after O’Hara received the injection from Kwan, who had disguised himself as a nurse. O’Hara had initially believed that he was receiving a Covid-19 vaccine but became suspicious when he developed a skin condition in the injection area.

Kwan’s motive for attempting to kill O’Hara is believed to be linked to his mother’s will, which stated that O’Hara would inherit her home upon her death. This information suggests that Kwan’s actions were financially motivated and aimed at altering the distribution of assets following his mother’s passing. The police investigation into the incident revealed that Kwan had meticulously planned and executed the poisoning, using his medical knowledge and research into poisons to carry out the attack. The discovery of files related to poisons and poisoning on his computer further supported the prosecution’s case against him. Despite the harm caused to O’Hara, authorities hope that Kwan’s admission of guilt and subsequent legal proceedings will assist the victim in moving forward with his life following this traumatic incident.
