Hill, of Bodmin, was found guilty after denying the murder or manslaughter of Mr Allen and the attempted murder of Liam Phillips, Ryan Burger and Ryan Parsons in the early hours of April 30 last year. Tia Taylor, 22, and Chelsea Powell, 22, also from Bodmin, were on trial alongside Hill after pleading not guilty to ‘joint enterprise murder’ over the death of Mr Allen as well as attempting to pervert the course of justice. Hill was given a life sentence and will serve a minimum of 27 years and 18 days in prison before eligible for parole, taking the time he has already been in custody into account. Five written victim impact statements were earlier read out to the court ahead of the sentencing. Liam Phillips needed keyhole surgery after being stabbed in the abdomen during the incident. He told how he was unable to work for three weeks following the incident and was not paid. He has a visible scar which he’s often asked about, bringing up the memories. “In terms of the emotional and physical impact the incident had on me, in the first few weeks I found it very hard to go out socialising,” he said. “I felt vulnerable and I was worried something like that night would happen again. I still think about the day in question.”

He said what happened that day will “always stay with [him]” and will “never go away”. “In summary what happened that day has had a massive and longlisting impact on me and my family,” he wrote. A second victim, Ryan Burger, was stabbed in the groin and operated on in a life-saving nine-hour surgery at Derriford Hospital. He said had it not been for a bouncer putting a belt around his leg as a tourniquet he would have “bled out and died”. He phoned his mum as he bled out in the street and told her he didn’t think he would make it. He was left unable to walk and needed to use a wheelchair for up to four weeks following surgery and he still walks with a limp on occasion.

“After I’d been stabbed I thought I was dying,” he wrote in his statement. “I’d said goodbye to my mum on the phone and there were times in the ambulance that I thought I was dying. It was a horrendous experience and incredibly traumatic.” Victim impact statements from Rhiannon Tompsett who was stabbed in the leg and Ryan Parsons, who was stabbed in the chest, were also read to the court. Becky Dustan, sister of Michael Riddiough-Allen, gave a final and very moving victim impact statement describing the void his death has left in the lives of those who knew and loved him. She said: “The vision of [Michael] being beaten in his last moments is all we see when we close our eyes.”

Her statement went on to describe his death as “all encompassing” saying “there isn’t a moment that goes by where we don’t think about him”. She remarked about the “senseless” and “avoidable” death of her brother, saying: “Things will never be the same.” Hill’s barrister Andrew Langdon KC said Mike was a ‘brave man, a kind man, who took the decision to intervene unarmed’. He said:”He took on a man with a knife and he paid with his life for it.”

He added Hill was not ‘mindless or unintelligent’ but made a ‘gross errorof judgement when he purchased that wretched weapon’ and caused ‘untold misery’ during 20 seconds of violent overreaction.
