On a Saturday, a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) aircrew rescued seven adults and one child after their boat capsized 36 miles west of the Boca Grande, Florida coastline. The boaters reported that their 28-foot boat had capsized and was sinking near Fort Myers. After activating an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB), an Air Station Clearwater MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew located the signal from the boaters’ Personal Locator Beacons. The crew spotted the beacon’s strobe lights and found all eight individuals wearing life jackets and holding onto a cooler. In a dramatic rescue captured on video, the USCG helicopter hovered above the stranded boaters and lifted them from the waters before taking them to emergency medical services at Venice Municipal Airport. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Santiago Gomez, Coast Guard Public Affairs Detachment Tampa Bay, commended the boaters for carrying all the necessary lifesaving equipment needed for their rescue.
