President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign is making a significant investment in advertising, allocating $50 million through the end of June. The campaign’s first television ad focuses on Donald Trump’s felony conviction and other legal issues, aiming to highlight the differences between the candidates as the November election approaches. The ad campaign includes targeted messaging to reach Black, Hispanic, and Asian American voters, as well as a spot highlighting Trump’s conviction on 34 felony counts in a New York hush money case. It will air on various platforms in battleground states and nationally.

In addition to Trump’s criminal conviction, the ad titled “Character Matters” also mentions separate proceedings where Trump was found liable for sexual assault and financial fraud. Trump currently faces felony charges in three other criminal cases, although it is uncertain if they will go to trial before the election. The ad emphasizes the contrast between Trump being labeled a convicted criminal and Biden fighting for families, as seen in images of a Trump mug shot and Biden high-fiving supporters.

Biden has repeatedly brought up Trump’s 34 felony convictions while criticizing him for claiming that the case was politically motivated. Biden argues against such claims, calling it reckless and dangerous to question the verdict simply because it is unfavorable. Additionally, Biden’s son, Hunter, was recently convicted in Delaware on three felony charges related to the purchase of a gun in 2018. The president has expressed willingness to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal.

While a key part of Biden’s reelection strategy involves highlighting Trump’s policy proposals for a potential second term and energizing disaffected Democrats and independent voters, the campaign’s significant investment in an ad focusing on Trump’s legal issues indicates a renewed effort to make this a prominent election issue. Biden’s campaign spokesperson, Michael Tyler, emphasized the importance of contrasting Biden’s focus on the American people with Trump’s self-centered approach, stating that voters will be reminded daily of Biden’s commitment. Trump and his team have denied any wrongdoing and have suggested that the justice system is being weaponized against him, aiming to draw a clear contrast between Trump and Biden on the debate stage.

As the campaign continues to ramp up, both sides are making their case to the American people. Biden’s emphasis on Trump’s legal problems and his commitment to fighting for families contrasts sharply with Trump’s defense of himself and allegations of political motivation behind his legal issues. The upcoming debates will likely be a key moment in highlighting these differences and helping voters make their decision in November. As the election season progresses, both campaigns are expected to intensify their messaging and strategies to win over undecided voters and secure a victory in what promises to be a highly competitive race.
