President Biden’s reelection campaign is launching an ad reminding voters of former President Donald Trump’s role in ending the federal right to an abortion, following the Florida Supreme Court’s decision to allow the state’s six-week abortion ban to go into effect. The ad highlights Trump’s statement taking credit for the termination of Roe v. Wade during his presidency, as well as his appointment of three justices to the U.S. Supreme Court, resulting in a conservative majority that ultimately struck down the landmark law in 2022. Trump’s past stance on overturning Roe v. Wade and his current potential support for a national 15-week abortion ban are also addressed in the ad.

The ad emphasizes Democrats’ strong support for abortion access, with President Biden running to make Roe v. Wade the law of the land once again. Biden contrasts his stance with Trump’s, accusing Trump of not trusting women and highlighting the importance of providing women with a federal guarantee to the right to choose. The campaign plans to air the ad in major battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, and Nevada, as part of a $30 million advertising effort. The issue of abortion rights is seen as crucial in potentially flipping states like Florida, where women face limited alternatives due to the newly implemented abortion ban.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Democrats have found abortion rights to be a winning issue, helping limit losses in the 2022 midterm elections and winning support in states where abortion access has been put to a vote. Several states, including conservative ones like Kansas and Ohio, have moved to protect abortion rights since the landmark ruling. In Florida, the Supreme Court’s ruling has also allowed a ballot measure known as Amendment 4, which permits abortion until viability, to proceed to the November ballot. A majority of voters, according to a CBS News poll conducted in March, believe that overturning Roe v. Wade has been detrimental to the country.

The ad launched by President Biden’s reelection campaign aims to hold former President Donald Trump accountable for his role in ending the federal right to an abortion and highlight the stark differences in their stances on abortion rights. By emphasizing the importance of Roe v. Wade and the need to protect women’s right to choose, the campaign hopes to mobilize support in key battleground states and challenge the newly implemented abortion ban in Florida. The issue of abortion rights has proven to be a crucial one for Democrats, with voters across the country expressing concern over the implications of overturning Roe v. Wade and supporting measures to ensure continued access to safe and legal abortion.
