Jessica Oliver and Charlotte Harris, a pair of women, recently set a new world record for the fastest row across the Pacific Ocean, completing the journey from Monterey, California, to Kauai, Hawaii in just 37 days, 11 hours, and 43 minutes. This broke the record for the fastest row by female pairs as well as for overall pairs. Oliver and Harris, who met in college and bonded over their love for competition, had previously rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, breaking another record in the process. Inspired by their success, they decided to take on the World’s Toughest Row Pacific Challenge and underwent rigorous training for two years in preparation.
The duo’s journey across the Pacific Ocean was not without its challenges. The first 500 miles off the coast of America proved to be extremely difficult due to harsh weather conditions. Their boat lost its automatic steering early on, adding to the already challenging situation. As they raced against another team, Oliver and Harris found themselves rowing between 16 and 20 hours a day in order to stay competitive.
