Over 150 Bavarian men gathered in the small village of Bernbeuren to compete in Germany’s national championship of “Fingerhakeln,” or finger wrestling. Despite the risk of dislocated fingers and strained muscles, the competitors gathered in a large beer tent where around 1,000 spectators cheered them on as they enjoyed German beer and sausages and listened to Bavarian live music.
In each round of the competition, two competitors sit across from each other at a solid table and attempt to pull the other across by hooking one finger, usually the middle finger, through a small leather loop. The contest lasts only a few seconds, with the winner moving on to the next round. While dislocated fingers are common, the competitors are determined to emerge victorious. The Fingerhakler Gau Auerberg association, founded in 1961, organized this year’s championship, continuing a tradition that has been popular in beer houses and pubs across the region for many years.
