Avallon Mayor Jamilah Habsaoui, who was placed under investigation in April after 70 kg of cannabis were discovered at her home, has announced that she will resume her duties as an elected official, once again proclaiming her innocence. In a video posted on her Facebook page, Habsaoui stated, “Even though the investigation is not yet closed, I can finally resume my professional activity and all of my duties as an elected official.” This marks the first public statement by the left-wing mayor since her release on bail on May 15th, following over a month of provisional detention. According to local newspaper L’Yonne républicaine, her return to Avallon City Hall was made possible as she was granted a relaxation of her bail conditions in late September allowing her to appear in Yonne.

An initial investigation launched in October 2023 into drug trafficking implicated two of Jamilah Habsaoui’s brothers as potentially engaging in the purchase and resale of narcotics from their sister’s home. Raids were conducted at the homes of the suspects, as well as the pharmacy where Habsaoui worked and at Avallon City Hall, resulting in the seizure of 70 kg of cannabis resin and 983 grams of cocaine, primarily at the mayor’s residence, along with 7,143 euros in cash and two gold bars. Alongside the mayor, five individuals have been placed under investigation in connection with the same case, including two of her brothers. Habsaoui addressed the involvement of her brothers in her statement, emphasizing that individuals are not responsible for the actions of their relatives, even if the consequences of their individual actions can be serious and painful.

Habsaoui reiterated her “complete innocence in this case,” while strongly condemning drug trafficking as an “absolute scourge.” She expressed understanding that the involvement of her brothers in the investigation may raise questions and concerns. However, she emphasized that individuals should not be held accountable for the actions of their family members. The mayor stated, “I simply recall that we are not responsible for our relatives, even if the consequences of their individual actions can be serious and painful.” Habsaoui’s declaration of innocence comes in the midst of ongoing legal proceedings related to the drug trafficking case that has garnered significant attention in the community and beyond.

The controversy surrounding Jamilah Habsaoui’s case has divided the residents of Avallon, with some expressing support for the embattled mayor and others questioning her continued leadership in light of the allegations against her and her family members. Despite the ongoing investigation and legal proceedings, Habsaoui has chosen to assert her innocence and resume her duties as an elected official, highlighting her commitment to serving her constituents and fulfilling her responsibilities as mayor. The case has sparked debate and speculation within the town and broader public, underscoring the complexities and challenges that arise when public figures are implicated in criminal investigations.

As Habsaoui seeks to move forward in her role as mayor of Avallon, the community remains engaged and attentive to developments in the case, with reactions ranging from support to skepticism. The mayor’s decision to address the public through social media and affirm her innocence marks a significant moment in the ongoing saga, as she navigates the legal process while continuing to lead the town. The implications of the case extend beyond the individual involved, resonating with broader social and political issues surrounding drug trafficking, personal accountability, and the responsibilities of elected officials. The coming months will likely see further twists and turns in the unfolding story, as the community grapples with the fallout of the allegations and the path forward for Avallon and its leadership.
