The explosion at the Atkinson Distributing gas station in Cardiff, Idaho, on Sept. 11 resulted in the deaths of two individuals, Brandon Cook and Wesley Lineberry. Two others, identified as fuel tanker driver Donny Billeter and gas station attendant Roxann Hubbs, were badly burned and remained hospitalized. The explosion occurred as a fuel tanker semi-truck was filling above-ground tanks at the station, leading to the destruction of the tanker and debris being scattered across a city block-sized area. Both Lineberry and Cook were found outside the gas station, though it is unclear if they were inside or outside the building at the time of the explosion.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the explosion, with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration involved in the process. Idaho State Fire Marshal Knute Sandahl stated that it may take time to uncover the definitive cause of the incident, with more information expected to be released in October. The remaining fuel at the site has posed challenges for investigators, prompting the involvement of a regional hazardous materials response team to address the potential hazards.

According to Sandahl, gas station explosions are rare occurrences, with this incident being the first of its kind that he is aware of during his 19 years as state fire marshal in Idaho. He mentioned that although offloading fuel from tanker trucks to station tanks does carry some risks, it is generally considered a safe process due to specific procedures followed by drivers. Sandahl highlighted that the most significant danger often lies in activities like smoking while refueling a vehicle or filling plastic gas cans, which can introduce sparks and ignite volatile fuel fumes.

The explosion not only resulted in the tragic loss of lives but also caused damage to nearby buildings. Sandahl emphasized the importance of following safety protocols while handling fuel to minimize the risk of incidents like the one that occurred at the gas station. With investigations ongoing and assistance from federal agencies, efforts are being made to determine the exact cause of the explosion and prevent similar incidents in the future. The community has rallied together through fundraising efforts to support the injured individuals and their families, highlighting the impact that such disasters can have on a close-knit community.
