The authorities have identified the four victims who were killed in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia. The victims included two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, as well as math teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irmie. Schermerhorn, who was autistic, was believed to have wandered away from the school after dismissal. Aspinwall, who was also a football coach, was described by a student as kindhearted and caring, always there to help his students. The shooter, identified as 14-year-old Colt Gray, surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody following the rampage. An AR platform-style weapon was used in the shooting.

Investigations are ongoing to determine if anyone was specifically targeted in the shooting, although no known connections between Gray and the victims have been found so far. It is believed that Gray will be charged with murder and prosecuted as an adult. There is no evidence to suggest that any additional shooter was involved, and authorities are actively pursuing leads from any potential associates of the shooter. The FBI and local law enforcement received an anonymous tip about threats posted online regarding a possible school shooting in May 2023, which mentioned images of guns. Although the threats were determined to originate in Georgia, there was no probable cause for arrest at that time.

The father of the 13-year-old subject in the previous threats case stated that the child did not have unsupervised access to hunting guns in the house. The boy denied making the threats, and local schools were advised to monitor him. Gray is currently being held at the Barrow County Detention center as investigations continue. Three school resource officers were present at the school during the shooting and were able to make contact with the shooter, who surrendered immediately. The remaining shooting victims are expected to recover, with no more fatalities anticipated at this time. The FBI’s Atlanta field office and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office jointly handled the previous threats case.
