In Sydney and Melbourne, marches and chants against antisemitism continue as the anniversary of the October 7 terrorist attack on Israel approaches. The Executive Council of Australian Jewry reported a significant increase in antisemitic incidents in Australia following the attack in 2023, with 79 incidents in October and November of that year and 662 incidents in the same period a year later. These incidents include abuse, threats, and physical assaults against Jewish Australians, leading Jewish schools to increase security measures to protect their students. Despite the rise in antisemitism, Australia’s Attorney-General, Mark Dreyfus, and former treasurer Josh Frydenberg have refrained from addressing the issue, expressing concern over the alarming trend.

The Lowy family, well-respected and successful among the contemporary Jewish Australian community, has also been targeted by antisemites. Patriarch Frank Lowy, a Holocaust refugee who co-founded the Westfield shopping empire, has faced attacks on social media along with members of his family. His son, Steven Lowy, expressed the growing fear and discomfort within the Australian Jewish community following the rise in antisemitic incidents since October 7, urging pro-Palestinian groups to consider the barbarism and tragedy of the attack on that day. Steven Lowy recently spoke out against antisemitism in Australia, emphasizing the need for leadership and zero tolerance towards hate in the country.

Journalist Bret Stephens warns that the current wave of antisemitism might persist for decades if not addressed promptly. He notes the historical recurrence of anti-Jewish sentiments, now evolved into anti-Zionism, denying Jews the right to a homeland. The protesters believe they are fighting for a just cause, unaware of the harm and prejudice their actions perpetuate. Australia, known for its multiculturalism and respect for all, must uphold these values to ensure all minorities are protected from discrimination. Senator Penny Wong emphasized the need for respect amidst differing views and opinions on the events of the past year, urging empathy for those grieving the loss of life.

Australia, with its diverse population and commitment to inclusivity, stands as a sanctuary against ancient hatreds, promoting respect and understanding among its citizens. The recent surge in antisemitism highlights the importance of addressing intolerance and bigotry in the country to maintain social cohesion and unity. Leaders and institutions are called upon to take decisive action against hate speech and discriminatory behavior to prevent further escalation of antisemitic incidents. By upholding the values of respect and empathy, Australia can continue to be a beacon of tolerance and acceptance for all its residents, including the Jewish community facing heightened fear and insecurity in the wake of recent events.
