Gastroenterologist Joseph Salhab has been promoting the benefits of consuming enough vitamin E in a trending TikTok video. He stated that individuals who meet their dietary requirements for vitamin E tend to have lower rates of specific gut diseases and fatty liver disease. Vitamin E is known for its antioxidant properties, which protect the liver from oxidative stress, aid in healing it, and boost immunity.

A study published in the journal Nature earlier this year found that vitamin E can protect against non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition where fat accumulates in the liver. This disease can lead to severe liver damage and increase the risk of heart disease and liver cancer. The recommended daily intake of vitamin E for adults and teenagers over the age of 13 is 15 milligrams (mg), while children should consume less.

Some examples of foods rich in vitamin E include dry, roasted almonds, peanut butter, boiled spinach, sliced mango, avocados, blackberries, kiwis, cranberries, hazelnuts, pine nuts, and olive oil. Salhab emphasizes that it is best to get vitamin E from the diet rather than supplements, as supplements can lead to significant side effects if taken incorrectly. Some vitamin E supplements contain excessive amounts of the nutrient, far beyond the recommended daily intake of 15 mg.

Taking too many vitamin E supplements can lead to toxicity, resulting in symptoms such as bleeding, nausea, diarrhea, muscle weakness, and headaches. While vitamin E toxicity is rare, deficiencies may occur due to issues with fat absorption or metabolism. Salhab stresses the importance of a proper diet for good liver health, as it plays a crucial role in preventing gut diseases and fatty liver disease. Consuming a variety of vitamin E-rich foods is essential for overall health.
