The 15th edition of the Labor Festival in Florence is focused on “Ethics and safety of work in the era of artificial intelligence”. The President of the Council Giorgia Meloni sent a 5-minute video message that we publish in full. In it, she highlights the importance of work as the heart of the event and the government’s commitment to creating employment and wealth. She emphasizes the role of the state in enabling companies and workers to generate income and redistribute wealth in a fair manner. Meloni cites positive outcomes of the government’s efforts, such as an increase in employment and a record-breaking employment rate.

Despite these achievements, Meloni acknowledges that there is still work to be done. The government continues to focus on improving the labor market and making it more dynamic. Additionally, they are addressing new challenges that workers and businesses are facing, particularly in relation to generative artificial intelligence. Meloni recognizes the revolutionary impact that AI will have on all sectors of the workforce, traditional and innovative alike. She stresses that while the development of AI can enhance the quality and efficiency of work, it should not lead to worker displacement.

Meloni emphasizes the need to ensure that AI is human-centered, controlled by humans, and ultimately benefits people. She sees reskilling and upskilling programs as crucial for preparing individuals for the changing nature of work, as technological advancements will alter the way many professions are carried out. The government is working to launch an action plan on the use of AI in the workplace as part of Italy’s G7 Presidency. Meloni believes that Italy has the courage, vision, and capabilities to address complex issues and find innovative solutions.

The President expresses her gratitude to the Labor Consultants and all attendees for their contributions to the event. She values their insights and proposals and highlights the importance of investing in knowledge and skills, as they are key drivers of wealth in modern societies. The government is committed to promoting lifelong learning and adapting to the challenges posed by AI. Meloni concludes by reiterating the government’s determination to tackle difficult issues and pioneer innovative solutions, with the support and collaboration of all stakeholders.
