Despite an undefeated start to the season, Kansas City Chiefs MVP Patrick Mahomes is going through a rough stage in his career. Mahomes’ acknowledged his dip in performance, citing overthinking as a potential cause. Despite his approach, the Chiefs are yet to lose a game this season. In his first four games, Mahomes threw for 904 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions; his 226 yards per game rank him 11th best in the league while his 89.7 passer rating is 18th.

Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid remains unfazed with Mahomes’ early-season slump. According to Reid, his quarterback’s aspiration to enhance his skills is a positive characteristic. Reid advises Mahomes to keep moving forward despite the contrast with his previous performance levels.

Mahomes’ recent struggle could also be attributed to injuries within the team. Receiver Rashee Rice may be out after suffering a knee injury in the Chiefs’ Week 4 win over Los Angeles Chargers, with reports suggesting a torn ACL. Additionally, free-agent recruit Marquise “Hollywood” Brown is also unavailable for the regular season due to his August shoulder surgery.

The league’s defenses have shifted their coverages primarily to prevent deep shots, a notable strength of Mahomes. An increase in Cover 2 defenses has obliged Mahomes to rely more on shorter passes. Mahomes confessed that his current strategy isn’t as enjoyable but still effective.

However, there are promising signs in rookie player Xavier Worthy. The first-round rookie, who holds the record for the fastest 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine, has already scored three touchdowns this season. Reid believes Worthy is ready to help the Chiefs’ attack, praising him as smart with good football instincts.

While Mahomes may not be at his best, the Chiefs won a Super Bowl just last year, with Mahomes experiencing the worst statistical year amongst his six years with the team. Reid reassures fans that Mahomes’ performance fluctuations are natural and aren’t alarming. After all, Mahomes is dedicated to his craft and seeks constant improvement.
