Former MTV VJ Ananda Lewis, 51, has shared that she is doing well and thriving after choosing to undergo new treatment for her Stage 4 breast cancer. Initially diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2019, Lewis opted against the doctor-recommended double mastectomy at the time, which led to the cancer progressing to Stage 4. She is now taking a drug that treats metastatic cancer, and while she is not a candidate for surgery and chemotherapy at this stage, the medications she is on have shrunk some tumors, with a few being almost undetectable.

Lewis revealed her cancer was Stage 4 and discussed her decision to refuse the double mastectomy at a CNN roundtable, expressing some regret for not opting for surgery. She felt at the time she did not have good options and instead focused on alternative treatments, such as improving mental health, getting more sleep, and reducing alcohol consumption. However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, her cancer spread, leading her to seek help and undergo targeted chemotherapy. Despite responding well to treatment initially, a scan in October 2023 showed the cancer had spread throughout her body, considered Stage 4.

While Stage 3 breast cancer is often treatable with a high survival rate, Stage 4 breast cancer, or metastatic breast cancer, is considered incurable with a lower survival rate. Studies have shown that cancer patients who delay or refuse traditional treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone therapy in favor of alternative medicine have a greater risk of death. Lewis has expressed regret for refusing regular mammograms out of fear of radiation exposure, acknowledging that she had been exposed to far more radiation during cancer treatment than she would have had from mammograms. She emphasizes the importance of early detection of breast cancer.

Lewis acknowledged that the decision to refuse the double mastectomy may not have been the best one and expressed some regret for not undergoing the surgery at the time. Despite this, she shared that the current medications she is taking, along with other supportive measures she has implemented, are working well for her, leading her to feel like she is thriving. While the cancer has spread to different parts of her body, Lewis has remained resilient and focused on her treatment plan. She also emphasized the importance of monitoring and seeking help when needed in dealing with cancer.

Lewis has taken a holistic approach to her cancer treatment, incorporating alternative options alongside medical interventions. She has focused on mental health, lifestyle changes, and regular monitoring of her condition. While going through the treatment process, Lewis experienced moments of frustration and anger at herself for not taking certain actions earlier. However, she remains determined to continue her fight against cancer and has shown resilience in adapting to the challenges that come with a Stage 4 diagnosis. Despite the setbacks, Lewis remains positive and committed to her health and well-being.

As she continues her battle against Stage 4 breast cancer, Lewis remains an advocate for cancer awareness and early detection. She has urged others to prioritize their health and not delay necessary medical interventions. Through her journey, Lewis has shown courage, vulnerability, and strength, inspiring others to take charge of their health and seek help when needed. Her story serves as a reminder of the importance of regular check-ups, early detection, and a proactive approach to addressing health concerns.
