The deployment of a new subsonic cruise missile, known as the Kh-69, in Ukraine by Moscow has raised concerns about the potential dangers it poses. The Kh-69 missile is believed to be more dangerous than the hypersonic ballistic missile, Kh-47M2 Kinzhal, previously boasted about by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that the Kh-69 has been used in strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, destroying key components of a thermal power plant in Kyiv Oblast.

Although not as fast as the hypersonic Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missile, the Kh-69 has an extended range, allowing Russian forces to launch it from 240 miles away from their targets. This is a significant increase from the previously estimated range of 190 miles and surpasses the 120-mile range of the most recent Kh-59MK2 variant. The Kh-69 can be launched from more common tactical aircraft, such as the Sukhoi Su-34 and Su-35, rather than the strategic bombers and interceptors usually used for missile strikes. Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Major Ilya Yevlash noted that the Kh-69 is an improved version of the Kh-59 cruise missile previously used by Moscow in attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.

Despite the increased threat posed by the Kh-69 missile, Ukrainian forces are working on developing methods to counter it. Major Yevlash mentioned that Patriot air defense systems would likely be able to intercept the Kh-69 missiles. In response to recent Russian air strikes, the German Defense Ministry announced that it would supply another Patriot battery system to further strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses. The German decision to support Ukraine comes amid growing concerns about the escalating conflict in the region, with Russia continuing to deploy advanced weaponry in its attacks.

The deployment of the Kh-69 missile marks a concerning escalation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with Moscow using advanced weaponry to target key infrastructure in Ukrainian territory. The Kh-69’s extended range and improved capabilities pose a significant threat to Ukraine, prompting efforts to develop effective countermeasures to protect against missile attacks. The provision of additional Patriot battery systems by Germany reflects the international community’s recognition of the need to support Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. As the situation continues to evolve, it remains crucial for diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and prevent further escalation of the conflict.
