David and Marilyn Brinklow’s home in Staffordshire was damaged after an ambulance exploded outside their house, setting their garden on fire. The explosion occurred just moments after the ambulance dropped off a 91-year-old wheelchair user neighbor who had returned home after a hospital stay. The incident was captured on video and showed two care workers wheeling the woman to her home before smoke began pouring out of the ambulance’s engine. Shortly after, the vehicle exploded, causing significant damage to the Brinklows’ property.

The explosion was so forceful that the ambulance’s roof was ripped off and blown 50ft into the air before crashing through the Brinklows’ garage. Thankfully, no one was injured in the blast, but their house suffered smoke damage and their garden was set ablaze. The intense heat melted the back of their car, shattered their living room windows, and singed their curtains. Marilyn Brinklow described the experience as being “like a Hollywood movie” and mentioned that the flashbacks were disturbing for her nerves.

Retired carpenter David Brinklow expressed shock at the incident, stating that it was like a “horror show” and noting his relief that no one was killed. He mentioned concerns about getting the insurance company involved to repair their damaged home as quickly as possible. The private ambulance company, EMED, responsible for the vehicle, stated that they were investigating the cause of the explosion. They reassured that their ambulances undergo regular safety checks and that patient and community safety are their top priorities.

The incident has left the Brinklows shaken, with Marilyn still experiencing flashbacks from the traumatic event. She recounted the details of how bits of the exploded ambulance, like glass, flew off and set fire to their property, describing the aftermath as “horrible.” The couple is eager to have their home repaired and to move on from the terrifying experience. The video of the explosion, captured by a passerby, has garnered attention for its shocking nature and highlights the potential dangers associated with emergency vehicles.

EMED, the ambulance company, acknowledged the damage caused to neighboring properties and assured that they were working with their insurer to manage the situation. They emphasized their commitment to patient safety and community service, indicating that they were conducting an internal investigation with safety consultants to determine the cause of the explosion. The Brinklows’ story serves as a cautionary tale about the unexpected risks associated with emergency services and the importance of ensuring the safety of both patients and the surrounding community. The couple’s ordeal serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of emergencies and the impact they can have on individuals and their homes.
