Airports all over the U.S. are investing billions of dollars in modernizing and expanding their facilities to ease congestion and reduce wait times as air travel continues to grow. The International Air Transport Association expects 7.8 billion air travel trips annually by 2040, double what it was before the pandemic, and this has been a major driver for airport expansions and modernization. The top sector of the travel industry with plans to increase their tech investments by 17% this year, and most travel companies have planned moderate to aggressive tech investments this year, as indicated by Skift’s 2024 State of Travel report and survey data from Amadeus.

One of the key tech upgrades for airports is security checkpoints, with many adding biometrics and upgrading screening technologies for carry-on bags and passengers. Another top investment area is checked baggage drop-off and handling, which has historically been neglected by airports and airlines, leading to negative experiences for passengers. Several U.S. airports are working on major renovation and modernization projects, including John F. Kennedy International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, Portland International Airport, San Antonio International Airport, and Pittsburgh International Airport.

John F. Kennedy International Airport is investing $4.2 billion in a new terminal 6 with 10 gates and modern technology such as self check-in, bag drop, streamlined security operations, baggage claim, and digital concierge services. The construction of terminal 6 is part of a larger $19 billion project that also includes a new terminal 1 and an expanded terminal 4. San Francisco International Airport has begun a $2.6 billion project to modernize terminal 3, which includes automated bag drop stations, new security checkpoints, a six-story building for airline lounges, and renovated check-in areas. The airport recently completed a $2.4 billion redevelopment of terminal 1 with automated security checkpoints, exit lanes, and baggage handling.

Portland International Airport is in the middle of a $2.2 billion renovation project to upgrade its main terminal, with the first phase already open and featuring new check-in areas, streamlined security, a public space with stadium seating, a mezzanine restaurant, and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems. The second phase will include automated exit lanes, new lounges, restaurants, and shops, as well as upgraded security screening technology. San Antonio International Airport is embarking on a $2.5 billion expansion project to double its capacity, with plans for up to 17 domestic and international gates, new terminal space, and advanced tech for security and passenger areas.

In addition, Pittsburgh International Airport is building a new 811,000-square-foot terminal as part of a $1.4 billion project that is expected to be completed in 2025. The new terminal is designed to be tech-forward, efficient, and sustainable, with streamlined ticketing stations, security checkpoints, baggage claim systems, friendly wayfinding design, garden terraces, and more dining and shopping options. These major renovation and modernization projects at U.S. airports reflect the industry’s commitment to improving the passenger experience, enhancing security, and keeping pace with the growing demand for air travel.
