Skanska, a project development and construction company in Seattle, is utilizing two autonomous robots from Nextera Robotics to assist in constructing a 31-story apartment building in Seattle’s Belltown neighborhood. The robots are equipped with high-resolution, 360-degree photography capabilities, providing architects and Skanska’s development team with constant visibility of the project site. This technology allows for improved efficiency, safety, and oversight of the construction process.

Stewart Germain, Skanska’s director of innovation, highlights the benefits of utilizing the Didge robots, emphasizing the time and effort savings, as well as the enhanced data management capabilities. The robots are able to capture high-definition images of the site from consistent angles, which would otherwise require significant human labor. The photography is uploaded to an AI-powered system that addresses concerns related to tracking progress, quality control, and safety compliance on the job site.

Nextera’s AI technology enables the robots to detect and analyze various objects, track progress of different systems within the building, and ensure safety compliance based on OSHA standards and client requirements. The AI can identify potential safety hazards, such as uncovered holes, inadequate lighting, or workers not wearing proper safety equipment, and report them directly to safety personnel. By leveraging machine learning and neural networks, the robots provide comprehensive insights and monitoring capabilities at the construction site.

The Didge robots complement existing safety measures by conducting thorough visual inspections of the site, replacing the need for periodic human spot checks. This robot relies on the BIM model to print directly on concrete slabs where walls and other elements are intended to be placed.
