Jessie McGrath, a veteran, NRA member, and lifelong Republican, decided to undergo a political transformation after starting her physical transition to match her gender identity a decade ago. Despite identifying as a Republican even after beginning gender reassignment surgeries in 2014 at the age of 53, McGrath changed her political views due to Donald Trump’s opposition to gender reassignment surgery. Concerned about the lack of support for trans people from the Trump campaign, McGrath ultimately decided to switch her political affiliation.
Growing up on a family farm in rural Nebraska, McGrath struggled with her gender identity from a young age. Raised in a conservative, religious household, she turned to prayer to cope with her inner conflict. Following the passing of her mother and step-father, she experienced intense gender dysphoria at the age of 53 while cleaning out her mother’s belongings. This led her to seek information about gender reassignment surgery and ultimately decide to transition physically to align with her true identity.
Over the course of 10 years, McGrath underwent therapy, doctor’s appointments, surgeries, and electrolysis to complete her transition. Despite the challenges, she expressed no regrets about her decision and found transitioning to be one of the most rewarding experiences in her life. While transitioning, McGrath initially maintained her Republican identity but later registered as a Democrat after moving back to Nebraska and becoming a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. She plans to vote for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.
McGrath’s involvement in politics has led her to advocate for the transgender community and raise awareness about the issues they face. She hopes that a potential victory for Kamala Harris in the upcoming election will bring about a shift towards working together in the middle to solve longstanding problems. Additionally, she looks forward to the possibility of dismantling the divisive rhetoric associated with the MAGA movement and fostering a more inclusive and collaborative political environment.
