The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a warning about the possible arrival of a new “cold air mass” that will move from Europe towards the southwest in the coming days, reaching the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. This phenomenon may isolate as a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels) or a cold storm in the Mediterranean or southern peninsula by Wednesday, leading to a general drop in temperatures. There is uncertainty about the areas where it will rain the most, with heavy rainfall expected in Baleares and the Mediterranean coast. The intensity and distribution of the precipitation are still unclear.

The new weather instability starting from Tuesday will bring in a humid Mediterranean flow from the east, leading to heavy and persistent precipitation in Baleares, the Mediterranean coast, parts of Cantabria, the north of the Pyrenees, and the central peninsula, as well as snow in mountainous areas. The southern part of the Balearic archipelago, particularly the Pitiusas islands including Ibiza and Formentera, may be the first to be affected, with the possibility of impact on other parts of the Mediterranean coast. Accumulation of 80-100 mm of rain and locally over 200 mm is expected. Precipitation is likely to spread to most of the peninsula starting Wednesday, with snow in mountain systems but with increasing altitudes.

From Saturday, the intensity of precipitation in the Mediterranean area will decrease and move to the Atlantic coast, according to forecasts. However, the uncertainty about the evolution of this cold air mass remains high, and unexpected episodes cannot be ruled out. The situation is being monitored closely by AEMET to provide updated information and warnings as needed. It is important for residents and officials to stay informed about weather developments and take necessary precautions in case of heavy rainfall or snowfall and potential disruptions.

The potential impacts of this weather event include possible flooding in coastal and low-lying areas, especially in Baleares and the Mediterranean coast. Strong winds may also accompany the precipitation, affecting maritime activities and transportation. Snow accumulation in mountainous regions could lead to travel disruptions, and authorities are advised to take necessary measures to ensure public safety and minimize any potential risks. AEMET is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updated forecasts and warnings to help mitigate the impact of the upcoming weather event.

Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels such as AEMET and local authorities, follow any advisories or warnings issued, and be prepared for changing weather conditions. It is important to take necessary precautions to protect property and ensure personal safety during adverse weather events. Authorities are advised to have contingency plans in place for emergency response and to coordinate efforts with relevant agencies to minimize the impact on the population. By staying informed and taking proactive measures, communities can better prepare for and respond to weather-related challenges.
