These pioneering breakthroughs aim to enhance our lives and improve the healthcare system. Last year’s winner was AltPep, a Seattle startup working on a test for Alzheimer’s disease. The finalists for this category were chosen based on community nominations and input from GeekWire Awards judges, with winners set to be announced at a live event in Seattle on May 9.

The first finalist, A-Alpha Bio, is a Seattle startup that combines computational tools with yeast experiments to identify therapeutic proteins for treatment. Founded in 2017 by David Younger and Randolph Lopez, the company partners with drug firms to help them find effective agents for various conditions and raised $22.4 million in funding last year. AdaptX, previously known as MDMetrix, uses AI to analyze medical data from electronic health records to improve care delivery. Led by CEO Warren Ratliff, the Seattle startup secured a $10 million investment in November.

adyn, founded by Elizabeth Russo, offers a birth control test that analyzes hormone levels and DNA to recommend personalized medication. The company raised $2.5 million in funding in 2021, with backing from 23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki. CalmWave, a spinout of the Al2 Incubator, aims to reduce hospital noise by minimizing alarms from patient monitoring devices in the ICU. Led by CEO Ophir Ronen, the startup won the UX Design of the Year award last year and raised $4 million in 2022.

Proprio, a University of Washington startup, is changing surgery with its Paradigm system that allows surgeons to view key structures in three dimensions in real time. Led by CEO Gabriel Jones, the company received FDA clearance and raised $43 million last year. These five finalists represent cutting-edge innovations in healthcare and are vying for the Health Innovation of the Year award at the GeekWire Awards. Community voting is open until April 12, with winners to be announced at the event on May 9.

The GeekWire Awards event will be held at Showbox SoDo in Seattle, where winners in various categories, including Health Innovation of the Year, will be recognized.
