One person was killed and seven others were injured in a cable car accident that occurred in Antalya on April 12th. Additionally, 174 people who were trapped in the cabins were evacuated after a 23-hour operation. Following the accident, the Antalya Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office detained 14 suspects on charges of causing death and injury by negligence.
Among the suspects, Kepez Mayor Mesut Kocagöz was one of the five who were arrested, while the others were released. After the accident, numerous inspections and investigations were carried out both at the scene of the incident and on the cable car system.
A report prepared by experts revealed that there were faults in maintenance, repair, and inspection, and that the accident occurred as a result of the bolt on the pole breaking. The cabins, which hung in the air for five days, were gradually brought back to the starting point of the Sarısu Cable Car System after the prosecutor’s examination.
A total of 36 cabins, including the broken one, were lowered to the ground in 2.5 hours after the cable system was activated. Following the operation supervised by Antalya Metropolitan Municipality teams, the cabins will be further examined for any potential issues that may have contributed to the accident.
