North Carolina football player Tylee Craft tragically passed away on Saturday morning from a rare form of lung cancer at the age of 23. The news was announced by coach Mack Brown during a postgame news conference following the Tar Heels’ loss to Georgia Tech. Craft had been battling the rare form of lung cancer since March 2022 and had surpassed the doctors’ expectations by continuing to attend meetings and practices with a positive attitude. His teammates and coaches honored Craft during Saturday’s game, which was also the team’s annual Cancer Awareness Game.

During the game, wide receiver J.J. Jones wore Craft’s jersey with his No. 13 and last name in remembrance of his teammate. Brown revealed that he had not learned of Craft’s passing until after the game, but had sensed something was wrong after sharing an emotional hug with Craft’s mother during the first quarter. The football program at UNC also shared the news of Craft’s death on social media and released a tribute video in his memory. The men’s basketball team also paid tribute to Craft by wearing shirts with his name and number during their intrasquad scrimmage.

Craft, a native of Sumter, South Carolina, had played in seven games as a receiver and on special teams as a true freshman in 2020, and four games in 2021 before his diagnosis. Despite his illness, he remained present and close to the program, leaving a lasting impact on his teammates and coaches. The football program described Craft as a unique individual who had touched the lives of many with his positivity and smile, stating that although he may no longer be with them in body, his spirit will continue to watch over them. The UNC community has come together to support each other during this difficult time and honor Craft’s memory.

Brown expressed the importance of being strong for the team and providing support for his players both on and off the field. He emphasized the need for unity and strength during this challenging period and vowed to be there for his players as they navigate through their grief. The UNC football program paid tribute to Craft’s remarkable spirit and positive impact on the team, acknowledging his unique qualities that made him stand out. Craft’s presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through the memories and experiences shared with his teammates and coaches.

The UNC community has rallied together to remember and honor Craft’s memory, showing support and love for one of their own who battled courageously against cancer. As they mourn the loss of a beloved teammate, friend, and family member, they will continue to draw strength from each other and hold onto the positive impact Craft had on their lives. His legacy will remain a lasting tribute to his strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity. The outpouring of support and tribute from the UNC football and basketball teams demonstrates the deep impact Craft had on those around him and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
