Kate Kaufling, a sophomore nursing student at the University of Kentucky and member of the university’s dance team, passed away on March 31 after battling osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. She and her twin sister, Abbey, joined the dance team in fall 2023, where she was known for her infectious smile and beloved by her teammates and coaches. The university expressed their deep sadness at her passing and commended her for her bravery and strength throughout her battle with cancer.

In addition to being a talented dancer, Kaufling was also described as an exceptional student who took her academics seriously while studying in the College of Nursing. Osteosarcoma, the type of cancer she battled, often begins in the bones of teenagers and young adults, typically in the legs or arms. Symptoms include bone or joint pain, swelling, and unexplained bone fractures. Kaufling did not frequently update on her health journey on social media, but she did share a post on January 6 announcing the end of her chemotherapy treatment and expressing gratitude for the support she received.

In her social media post, Kaufling opened up about her experience with cancer, describing the unexpected turn her life took with the diagnosis and treatment. Despite the challenges she faced, she maintained a positive outlook on life and emphasized the importance of cherishing moments with loved ones and expressing gratitude for everyday blessings. She concluded with a quote emphasizing the importance of living in the present moment and appreciating each day as a gift.

Kate Kaufling is survived by her parents, Holly and Steve Kaufling, as well as her twin sister, Abbey. The University of Kentucky community mourns the loss of a talented and bright young student, remembering her courage, strength, and positive attitude in the face of adversity. Her legacy as a dedicated student, talented dancer, and inspirational individual will continue to impact those who knew her and will serve as a reminder of the importance of resilience and gratitude in the face of difficult circumstances.

The university expressed their condolences to the Kaufling family and the dance team community, acknowledging the impact of Kate’s passing and the loss of a beloved member. Despite the sadness of her passing, her memory will live on through the impact she made on those around her and the inspiration she provided through her bravery and positive attitude. The University of Kentucky will honor Kate Kaufling’s legacy and celebrate the strength and resilience she demonstrated during her battle with cancer. May her spirit and memory continue to inspire all who knew her to live each day with gratitude and hope for the future.
